Why do people spend billions on IT certifications annually?While a lot of factors go into onea??s decision to get and stay certified, like job advancement and career satisfaction, certification is largely about money. And IT certifications do not fail them with the average certification providing a 12 percent increase in salary, equivalent to $5,821. This data is from the a??Certification and IT Professionals?research study conducted by Fairfield Research, Inc., and Certification Magazine. In this survey, 2,158 CertMag readers completed an in-depth questionnaire on their certifications and their behaviors in pursuing certification.

More Certifications Means More Money
|
This survey shows that each additional certification brings an average added return value of between $2,200 and $3,000. Evidencing more being better, a person with only one certification had an average income of $53,000. A person withfive technical certifications makes nearly $10,000 more ($62,000). A person with seven technical certifications makes, on average, $71,000. The highly certified individual with 10 certificates makes, on average, $75,000 per year. Figure 1 shows the difference in pay range for those holding multiple certifications.

Microsoft tops the list of top 10 certification programs, followed by CompTIA. The other eight certification programs on the list are:

Pay by Program and by Certification

An interesting conclusion drawn from this survey is that the most popular certification program does not mean the highest salary or the greatest salary increase for its holders. IT professionals with Oracle andLotus certifications take the lead in the salary grade, with Microsoft and CompTIA professionals rounding out the list.

Calculated Increases
|
As stated previously, the average certification directly contributes to a 12 percent increase in salarya???equivalent to a $5,821 return on certification investment.
Cisco shows its professionals the money more than any program with a 17.8 percent salary increase, equivalent to $10,606.
Microsoft, the industry leader, provides a return of 10.9 percent or $5,778 return on investment.
Novell certification resultes in a 13 percent salary increasea???equivalent to a $7,080 increase and return on certification investment. With its CNA and CNE certifications, Novell provides its certification holders with a salary increase that is 23 percent higher than the average certification program.
Due to higher base salaries, Oracle certificants do not receive as large of a percentage increase as Novell professionals, but the Oracle certification-related salary increases are larger in terms of dollars. The average Oracle certification holdera??s salary is $62,000, compared to the average Novell certification holdera??s salary of $54,500. Regardless of the percentages, Oraclea??s predominant OCP certification shows 28 percent more money than the average certification program measured.
Professionals with Lotus certifications enjoy an average 10.1 percent increase in annual salary, an increase below the average percentage increase. However, Lotus certificationa???predominantly the Lotus CLP and CLS certificationsa???resultes in an above-par dollar return. The average Lotus certificant sees a salary increase of $6,168 after certification.
Hewlett-Packard certification contributes to an 11.1 percent salary increasea???equivalent to a $6,098 salary increase and return on certification investment.
Hewlett-Packarda??s Technical Support and Repair certification, along with its IT Professional Systems Administrator certification, provides professionals with a modest 5 percent higher salary increase than the average certification.
CompTIA certification holders have the least return on certification investment. Its A+ certification was one of the most-often-held certifications, and both it and Network+ provide a 10.9 percent increase in salary, netting professionals a $5,058 salary increase ?3 percent below the average certification measured.

Certifications provided by the same certification provider result in different salary increases. For example, Microsoft MCSE+1 brings the largest increase both in percentage and dollar with 20% and $12,909 respectively while Microsoft MCP rounds out the list with a 10.5 percent salary increasea???equivalent to a $5,600 increase. Figure 5 lists the percent and dollar returns of the 10 most-popular certifications.
